Islamist gunmen kill 8, kidnap 38 in two Nigerian churches attacks

As attacks on Christians continue to rise in Nigeria, Islamist gunmen raided two churches in the northern state of Kaduna on Sunday, killing eight people and kidnapping 38 others.

The information was revealed by an official of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Monday, weeks after a similar deadly attack in a Catholic Church in Owo the south west, Nigeria claimed the lives of over 40 people.

Islamist gunmen kill 8, kidnap 38 in two Nigerian churches attacksThe attack occurred during the morning service of a Catholic and Baptist church on Sunday, Reverend Danlami Gajere, CAN chairman for Kasuwan Magani ward in Kaduna state, told Reuters by phone.

The state police spokesperson and Kaduna’s commissioner for internal security did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Nigerian government had blamed the insurgent group Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) for the attack in Two, Ondo State. But ISWAP has not claimed responsibility for the attack. read more

Armed Islamist gangs are rife across Nigeria’s northwest where they rob or kidnap for ransom, and violence has been increasing, where thinly stretched security forces often fail to stop the attacks.
