Kenyan police say they are hunting for the former leader of the outlawed Mungiki militia, Maina Njenga after seizing two firearms and rolls of bhang at a home linked to him in western Nakuru county.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) in a statement on Monday said the items were recovered following a raid mounted by detectives at Ngomongo village last week.
Police said eight suspected members of the Mungiki sect were arrested during the raid.
Mr Njenga had been summoned to appear at the police headquarters in Nakuru on Monday, but he failed to do so and instead went into hiding, local media reported.
Corporal Eliud Misoi, a detective based in Nakuru, said the eight individuals who were arrested are suspected to be members of an organised criminal gang.
This comes a few weeks after Mr Njenga’s homes in the capital Nairobi and central Laikipia county were reportedly raided by security officers for unknown reasons.
The Mungiki is a secretive sect that was banned in 2002 after being accused of being involved in violence.
