Senior Liberia anti-corruption official quits over no pay

The Comptroller at the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), J Barnard Nagbe has quit, citing the government’s failure to pay his salary and benefits.

In his resignation letter published on Tuesday by FrontPage Africa, J Barnard Nagbe said he had quit because working without pay and benefits was “nonsense” and “unbearable”.

“I have never had this experience in my professional life and never am I prepared to endure this nonsense. I cannot and will not never work without pay,” he said.

According to Frontpage Africa, President George Weah led government has been hit  with a series of high-profile resignations recently, as the country grapples with difficult economic conditions and a cash-crunch.

Nagbe’s resignation brings to three the number of high profile officials who have resigned from the Weah-government in less than a week.

The delay in the payment of salaries to civil servants and public officials has been reoccurring due to cash crunch that has hit the country.

Representatives, Senators, civil servants and other government officials have not taken pay for between three to four months respectively.

Frontpage Africa avers that delay in the payment of salaries to government employees working at integrity institutions including the Liberia Anti-Corruption Commission (LACC), General Auditing Commission (GAC), and the Internal Audit Agency (IAA) has the propensity to compromise the professional works of these institutions to combat against waste, fraud and abuse of public resources.
