Orji Kalu secretly whisked to Abuja

The former governor of Abia State, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu who was convicted in Lagos High Court last week and send to Ikoyi prison has now been moved to Kuje prison in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja.

Embattled former Abia governor, Senator Orji Uzor has been secretly moved to Kuje from Ikoyi prison. An impeccable source revealed to AfricanQuarters that the former governor, who believed his travail is connected to the permutation around 2023 presidential election did not feel safe at the Ikoyi prison.

Mostly, as it was alleged that his conviction and sentencing was facilitated by some elements within his own party, who wield great influence in the Lagos State.

Senator Kalu was said to have been flown into Abuja Airport at about 5.00am on Sunday 8, December 2019 to avoid the prying eyes of journalists and driven to Kuje prison in company of plain cloth prison wardens.

The Senate chief whip and former governor of Abia State, was sentenced to 12 years in prison by the Federal High Court in Lagos after convicting him of N7.65 billion fraud, he was pronounced guilty of the charge in a trial that lasted for 12 years.

The conviction comes 12 years after the ex-governor was first arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in 2007 and was tried alongside his company, Slok Nigeria Limited, and Udeh Udeogu, who was Director of Finance and Accounts at the Abia State Government House during Mr Kalu’s tenure as governor.
